With a large, modern fleet of articulated dump trucks – including Bell B60Es and B50Es – supported by efficient excavators, PJK Planthire has proven capacity to successfully undertake large volume load and haul contracts. Initially starting out at a KwaZulu-Natal quarry operation supplying tipper trucks and water carts, PJK Planthire has grown this aspect of the opencast mining operation from drill and blast through to load and haul and mine rehabilitation.

Traditionally operations were predominantly based in the coal sector; current operations have extended into platinum, andalusite, gold, phosphate, manganese, limestone and diamonds with strategic intent being to diversify into other mineral sectors and grow our geographical footprint into Africa.

Key optimization:

• Fleet pairing matrix: Maintain a standard pairing logic that maps excavator size (tonnage) to hauling unit type, bike/road/rail access, and cycle time. Include limits for weight per axle, payload capacity, and transport penalties (e.g., legal weight limits).
• Standardization playbook: Define a target set of core models for both excavators (20t up to 100t) and haulers, plus acceptable variant accessories. Include service interval schedules, common wear parts, and cross-site spare part pools.
•  Utilization discipline: Track hours per unit, load factor, and breakdown rate. Set thresholds to trigger preventive maintenance, part provisioning, or equipment swap-outs to keep hours low on the primary loading fleet.
•  Remote-site readiness: Create a “remote site kit” per standard unit (spares, consumables, fluids, tools, safety gear, radio/communications pack). Pre-stage kits in common locations to reduce mobilization time.
• Logistics and transport planning: Build standardized transport bundles with documented routes, escort requirements, permitting, weather considerations, and contingency plans for road closures or access restrictions.
•  Maintenance and data: Use a centralized maintenance database with: hours, cycles, MTBF/MTTR, component age, and service history. Leverage predictive maintenance where possible to prevent unexpected downtime on remote projects.
• Training and competency: Develop a cross-site training plan for operators and rigging teams on standard machines, with a focus on safe loading/unloading, cycle time optimization, and emergency procedures.
